PRE - Prefix: Means before

ABLE - Suffix: Means can do

DICT - Root Word: Means say or speak

Unpredictable: Means something that can not be guessed or something that we don't know what it will do.

After the instructor has gone over all the parts of the word unpredictable, and the meaning of 'dict' has been established the class will brainstorm other words with the root word 'dict'. After all the words have been written on the board, then the instructor will go through them all and give the definitions.

Verdict: A judgement spoken by a judge or authority figure

Dictionary: A book of all the words we use

Dictate: To tell someone something

Dictatorship: The government where one person dictates or says how everyone should live.

Students will then be given a handout dealing with root words and where they come from. some common Greek and Latin root words will be given on the handout. The students will be informed that over half of the words in the English language come from Greek or Latin roots. Students will be given words that they will have to guess the meaning of, based on the root words and the prefixes and suffixes.

Game: Balderdash
The game is played as follows;
  1. The instructor will write a word on the white board (i.e. interminable).
  2. Students will try to guess the correct meaning of the word and write it on a piece of paper.
  3. All of the meanings will be read by the instructor, (the correct meaning will be added if no one writes the correct meaning) and each student will vote for the meaning they believe to be the correct one.
  4. Students will get 3 points for writing the correct meaning, 2 points for guessing the correct meaning, and 1 point for every student who guesses their meaning to be the correct one.
