Reading for Fun
Class will begin with a joke;
A chicken walks in to a library, and up to the librarian, and says,"Book, book, book." (as a chicken)
The librarian looks at the chicken, and then gives the chicken a book. The chicken takes the book, and leaves the library. The next day, the chicken comes back and returns the book, then says to the librarian, "Book, book, book."
The librarian gives the chicken a new book, and the chicken leaves the library.
The third day the chicken comes back into the library and again returns the book and says to the librarian, "Book, book, book."
This time the librarian gives the chicken a book, but is so curious that he follows the chicken out of the library. The chicken walks out of the library, out of down, through a forest, and up to a pond. At the pond, the chicken drops the book at the feet of a frog and says,"Book, book, book."
The frog looks at the book and then says, "Read it. Read it." (as a frog)
Students will then be asked to tell their own jokes. After a few jokes are told, the class will then do page 134 and 135 of Empowering the Learner 2, where they will learn that there are many different reasons for reading, but one of the most important is reading for fun. Students will read several poems and jokes on the handout and then write a joke or funny story that they know. These will be shared with the class.
Next students will read two different limericks on the white board. Example;
There once was a man named O'neil.
Who went on the high ferris wheel.
He got halfway around,
Looked down to the ground,
And then he lost a ten dollar meal.
Students will be shown the structure of a limerick and then encouraged to write their own.
Examples;
There once was a woman named Jan,
Who always had a good plan.
She wanted a car,
To go to the bar,
But there's lots of us -- go get a van!!
There once was a man named Stan,
Who thought he had the master plan.
He knew some things,
But started to sing,
So I gave him the wickedest backhand.
Students will then get a list of short story terms which the instructor will then go over. The students will then read, "Charles", a short story from the reader, Strawberries and other Secrets."
In small groups the class will go through the terms and try to state which parts of the story fit into each of those terms.
