Day 25 Numeracy (Multiplying and Dividing Fractions)

Students will be given examples of how to multiply and divide fractions.

Multiplication

1 3/4 x 5/6

Step 1. Change the mixed number to an improper fraction.
1 3/4 = 7/4
Step 2. Multiply the numerators.
7 x 5 = 35
Step 3. Multiply the denominators.
4 x 6 = 24
Step 4. Write new fraction.
35/24
Step 5. Simplify.
35/24 = 1 11/24

Division
When dividing fractions, you invert (turn over) the fraction on the right, and then you multiply.
ex. 2/3 %(divided by, not percent) 4/5 = 2/3 x 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6

Students will then be given pages 48 and 49 of Mathematics Concepts, Student Workbook; to complete the problems.
