Day 28 Creative and Critical Thinking

The instructor will show the students how to play the ancient Chinese tangram game. Students will cut out specific shapes (as shown above), and asked to make pictures. This exercise stimulates the "play instinct" that is so important to creative thinking. Students use this to begin creative thinking.

Students will then be given the following steps to being a critical thinker.

Qualities of a critical thinker:
  1. Be willing to say, "I don't know"
  2. Define the terms
  3. Know what the words mean
  4. Practice tolerance
  5. Watch for hotspots, yours and others
  6. Consider the source
  7. Seek alternate views
  8. Ask questions
  9. Be willing to change your mind
  10. Examine the problems from different points of view
  11. Accept your changing perspective

Students will then be given two critical thinking assignments that they are to choose one to complete.

Assignment #1

Gather 3 advertisements. Identify any technique that the advertisers are using to try to convince you to buy their product (i.e fear, pride). Now that you know what these techniques are, are they successful?

Assignment #2

Read an article from a magazine. After, read the editor's letter. What does the letter say about the editor? About his or her point of view and what the believe to be important in life? How would this point of view affect the article?
