Day 33 Critical Thinking (Letters to the Editor)

Critical Thinking Assignment

Students will be given a copy of today's letters to the editor from the Star Phoenix, Friday, March 27. 2009. They will read the letters to the editor and then pick a letter in which they would like to do a critical thinking assignment. The students will go into groups according to their letter choice and discuss the following questions. One member of the group will act as a recorder and another member will act as the reporter. Discussion on each topic will be encouraged.

Discussion Questions

  1. Pick at least 3 terms from your letter and define them.
  2. What opinions did you hold before reading the letter? Did they change? Why or Why not?
  3. What does the author want to say? What are his/her sources?
  4. What ‘hot spots’ do you identify? How can you talk about these issues without angering people?
  5. List an example of how there was a conflict of points of view within your group. How did you resolve the conflict?
