The students will look at solving equations with a variable by adding and subtracting. Emphasis will be placed on the fact that: You can change any side of an equation, as long as you do the same to the other side. This is the premise of solving equations.
Addition
x + 14 = 23
x + 14 - 14 = 23 - 14
x = 9
Subtraction
x - 7 = 15
x - 7 + 7 = 15 + 7
x = 8
Students will then complete the questions on page 63 and 64 of Mathematics Concepts: Student Workbook.
