Day 34 Communication (A White River Sioux Legend)

Students will get a copy of the White River Sioux Legend, Spotted Eagle and Black Crow (link to story below). After reading the story the students will complete the following questions:

1. State two ways in which you can tell that Red Bird preferred Spotted Eagle.

2. Find a reason given in the story for each of these events.

a. Black Crow abandoned Spotted Eagle on the eagles' ledge.

b. Red Bird married Black Crow.

c. Spotted Eagle told only his parents of Black Crow's actions.

d. Black Crow pinned his sash to the ground and fought till he died.

3. Examining Characters. Unlike most legends the narrator does not tell the reader that one character is the champion and the other character is the villain. Instead, she tells what each young man does and lets the reader judge these actions. She even shows that Black Crow has some good qualities despite his weaknesses. For each warrior, list those actions and suggest good qualities. Then list actions that suggest bad qualities or weaknesses.

4. Identifying the Conflict. What is the conflict, or struggle, in this story? Keep in mind that the conflict must be part of the story almost from beginning to end.

5. Identifying the Climax. What is the turning point in the conflict? In what scene does Black Crow face the result of his betrayal of his friend? How does he face this?

6. Recognizing the Elements of Legends. Name some events in this story that are impossible.

7. Understanding the Legend. In this legend, both Spotted Eagle and Black Crow show courage. However, the legend suggests that courage is not enough to make a good warrior into a hero. What are some of the differences between Spotted eagle and Black Crow? What qualities does Spotted Eagle show that make him a better person? Your answer should be at least one paragraph long. Remember that a paragraph needs a topic sentence, a body, and a sentence in conclusion.
