Distance, Time and Rate
50 miles per hour can be written as 50mph, or 50 miles/1 hour. This is an example of a rate. A rate is a ratio between two unlike quantities. 50mph means that in one hour, you would have travelled 50 miles.
Example 1: If you travel at a rate of 50 mph for 2 1/2 hours, how far did you travel?
50(2.5) = 125, therefore you would have travelled 125miles in 2 1/2 hours.
Example 2: If you travel at the rate of 60mph for 1 hour and 45 mph for two hours, what is your average rate of speed?
60(1) + 45(2) = 150, therefore you will have travelled 150 miles in 3 hours.
150/3 = 50, therefore your average rate of speed is 50mph.
Students will then complete the questions on page 184 of Mathematics Concepts.
