Students will use the information from the previous article to determine the following:
- Ratio and percent of Aboriginal students to total amount of students:
- Ratio and per cent of Scholarships for Aboriginals to total amount of scholarships:
- Ratio and per cent of money for Aboriginal scholarships to the total amount of scholarships:
- # of FN Students: 1800, being 7.5% of student body. 1800 = .075x, x = 24000 total students. ratio: 3/40
- # of scholarships targeted to FN students: 36, total scholarships: 4148 ratio: 3/346 (rounded), per cent" .8%
- Money for FN scholarships $107,000, total money for scholarships: $7,500,000. ratio: 107/7500 Per cent: 1.4%
Students will then be given Activity 59 of I am Already Successful: Present your Viewpoint. Here students will write down a statement which defines their opinion on affirmative action. Depending on their opinion, they will be grouped into a for or against category. Students will then be put into groups of like minded people to discuss their reasons behind their opinions and to write an outline for a presentation of their viewpoint.They will focus on what points they want to make, what arguments they expect to face, and what questions they wish to answer. They will write a list of materials, facts and figures required, and a list of who is to do what. If their is interest to make their presentations, students will be given a chance.
