Students will be given a copy of a map of Canada.

Students will then define scale and legend.
Scale: a ratio of the actual distance to the distance on the map. On the map of Canada, 1cm = 300 kms. If we convert the kms to cms, we find that the scale is 30,000,000:1.
If we measure the map and find Canada to be 18cms wide from the Queen Charollette Islands to Newfoundland, we find it to be 18cms wide. Therefore, Canada is approximately 5,400kms wide.
Legend: A legend is a list of symbols that represents places and things found on a map.
Students will then get a blank map of Canada where they will label the provinces, territories and their capital cities.
They will then fill out the following tables:
