The instructor will begin with a review of solving equations with addition and subtraction. Then, the instructor will introduce more complex equations.
Example:
4x = 16
4/4x = 16/4
x = 4
3x + 3 = 18
3x + 3 - 3 = 18 - 3
3x = 15
x = 5
Students will then solve the equations on page 65 Mathematics Concepts: Student Workbook.
Creating Word Problems Given an Equation
Students will be given an equation and must make up their own word problems with that equation. They will then solve the equation.
Example: 8x + 9 = 73
There are 73 leaves on a plant with 8 branches. There are also 9 leaves on the trunk. How many leaves are on each branch?
8x + 9 = 73
8x = 64
x = 8
There are 8 leaves on each branch.
Students will then be given equations on page 66 of Mathematics Concepts: Student Workbook to make their own word problems.
